The Acadian Flag
It was in the occasion of their second national convention held in Miscouche, Prince-Edward Island, in 1884, that the Acadians of the Maritime Provinces chose their national flag and their national anthem. They adopted the three colors of the French flag in remembrance of the Country from which came their ancestors. The difference between the two flags, Acadian and French, is the star Image of Mary, placed in the blue section of the flag, because blue is the color of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This star, Stella Maris- which we praise in the anthem- guides the Acadian people through their tragedies. It has the papal colors to show the unwavering adherence of the Acadians to the Roman Catholic Church. The year 1984, marks the 100th anniversary of the emergence of the Acadians as a people. This event is symbolized by the adoption of their flag and anthem.
